The racial makeup of the city was 14.51% White, 81.90% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.54% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.73% of the population.

There were 5,297 households out of which 40.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.4% were married couples living together, 23.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.8% were non-families. 17.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
